A maid, Esther
Aniefiok, a 23-year-old indigene of Akwa Ibom State, has allegedly stolen
valuables estimated at N4m belonging to her boss, identified simply as Mrs.
Abiola.
Abiola, who lives
in the Ifako area of Lagos, told our correspondent she employed Aniefiok on
March 30 through an agent, Anthony Akpan, and she agreed to be paying her
N18,000 per month.
She said the
suspect was well-behaved and never showed any evil trait, until she broke into
her room on April 6.
Aniefiok was
alleged to have made away with gold jewellery, including a wedding band and
engagement ring, wristwatches, shoes, clothing items, a phone and about
N100,000 cash.
Policemen from the
Ifako Police Division were said to have been alerted to the incident.
The agent was
arrested, but the suspect was said to be at large.
Abiola told PUNCH
Metro that she was at a loss over the incident.
She said, “It is
still unbelievable. I had contacted the agent that my family needed a maid.
This was because me and my husband were working and we needed help around the
house.
“I don’t know her
family members, but since we know the agent, we thought we were safe.
“She even attended
a night vigil at the Redemption Camp with us and we were there throughout the
weekend.
“On Monday, April
6, which was a public holiday, we left her at home and went for an outing. We
did not return until evening.
“That was when we
saw that she was nowhere to be found and she had stolen our property.”
Segun, the man of
the house, said Aniefiok also took away the family’s foodstuffs.
He said, “Before
we left the house, we took her to the market, where she bought vegetables and
cow legs. She was to get them ready for my wife to prepare when we return.
“She also took all
of them away. We never suspected anything. She was well-behaved and you might
even mistake her for an angel.”
He said the agent,
who was arrested by the police, had been released on bail after he promised to
produce the suspect.
The Police Public
Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said he would get back to our correspondent.
He had, however, yet to do so as of press time.
