Mother Of Newborn Baby Who Was Buried Alive Arrested

Authorities in Los Angeles have arrested the mother of a baby who was buried alive near a Southern California bike path.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Bob Boese said Sunday the woman was arrested late last week. He declined to release the woman's identity, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Boese said tips from the public and media coverage of the baby's rescue led to the arrest.
The girl was believed to be 24 to 36 hours old when she was found Nov. 27.

Two sisters walking on a bike path near a riverbed in Compton heard the child's cry.

Two deputies found her wrapped in what appears to be a hospital blanket, buried in a hole under loose dirt and piece of asphalt. She was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Julie Chen Reveals Family Secret: My Cousin Was Almost Raised as My Brother

After confessing that her maternal grandfather was a polygamist, Julie Chen shared another dark secret from the other side of her family on The Talk.

The Big Brother host, 45, revealed Tuesday that when she was a child, her father's mother tried to convince her parents to raise her cousin as their son because they had no male heir.

"In Chinese culture, giving birth to a boy is everything. It allows a family to continue the family name and all the traditional Chinese customs," said Chen, whose parents emigrated to the United States.

But they had three daughters, welcoming Chen's older sisters and then the CBS journalist in 1970, and her mother was considered too old to conceive again.

"My grandmother convinced my dad's youngest brother, who is 15 years younger than my dad, to give up his first-born son Chris to my parents to raise as their own son and as my younger brother, all so that the family 'shame' could be lifted," she explained. "So, my grandmother goes … to my mom with this idea, basically saying that me and my two older sisters have no value and that my parents are a huge disappointment for not having a son."

At the time, Chris was 2 years old, and Chen was 12.

Luckily, her mother refused and stood up to her elder – a big risk in their culture.

"My mom said absolutely not. She told her mother-in-law, 'I am raising these three girls to be independent, strong-minded, and I am teaching them to never be ashamed of who they are, what gender they are, and you should be proud of them,' " Chen said.

Couple Drowns During Honeymoon At South African Resort

Weddings and honeymoon are always moments of joy when couples look forward to a new beginning. But for an Irish newlywed couple it was a sad end as the couple drowned off the coast of South Africa barely six days after their wedding.

John Rodgers, 28, and his wife Lynette, 26, from Holywood, Co Down went swimming in rough sea conditions in Plettenberg Bay a few hours into their honeymoon and both drowned.

John Rodgers’ body was discovered in shallow surf on Robberg Beach by a local man early Friday evening, South Africa's National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said. His wife's body was found around 220 yards away along the same beach.

Doctors performed CPR, but the couple were pronounced dead around 6pm on Friday evening.
Friends of the couple said they were “shocked” at the “absolute tragedy.”

North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne, who knows the family, said: “I am very shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the death of this young couple on their honeymoon in South Africa.

“This is an absolutely tragedy and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of both the young man and young lady who have sadly passed away. For a tragedy like this to happen days after their wedding during their honeymoon is beyond words.

“There is widespread shock and a real sense of numbness within the local community in Holywood at this time, particularly as the young lady was born in Holywood, attended the local schools in the area, and was from a very well respected family.

“My heart goes out to the grieving families and I trust and pray that the family may know God's help at this tragic time.”

The NSRI said: “It is suspected that they drowned. Sea conditions were rough with strong rip-currents in the vicinity.

“Police have opened an inquest docket and although no foul play is suspected, the deaths are being investigated.”

Last Monday, Lynette Rodgers, a physiotherapist, had posted a message on Facebook thanking her loved ones for coming to their wedding, which was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Holywood last Saturday.

She wrote: “John and myself would like to thank to everyone that joined us on Saturday and for all the well wishes!

“We greatly appreciate it and had the best day ever. Heading off today so will speak to everyone when we return! Xx”

A spokeswoman for the UK's Foreign Office said: “We can confirm the deaths of two British nationals in South Africa on Friday October 23.

“We are providing assistance to both families at this extremely difficult time.”
